Voormalig Team PokerStars Pro Online Dusty ‘Leatherass’ Schmidt nam geen blad voor de mond in zijn meest recente blog. Hij riep op tot zwaardere straffen voor scammers en cheaters. Daarnaast uitte hij pittige kritiek op Annie Duke en de nieuwe Epic Poker League. “What is going on these days in the poker community?”
Op zijn Cardplayer blog riep Schmidt spelers op de rug te rechten tegen valsspelers. “What is going on these days in the poker community? It seems not a day goes where we find out on 2+2 that someone isn’t scamming someone. I think we have had 5 or 6 such incidents in the past few weeks alone. Then we obviously have the Full Tilt and UB mess. Geez, what an industry I am a part of!”, vroeg Schmidt zich af.
Schmidt won online ruim $3 miljoen, maar maakte vooral furore met zijn pokerboeken en werk als coach. Hij verliet Team PokerStars Online na Black Friday, omdat hij niet meer online kon spelen in de USA. De huidige situatie in de pokerwereld, laat volgens Schmidt zien waarom er een gereguleerde markt met licenties nodig is.
Epic Poker Schandaal
En passant brandde Schmidt ook de Epic Poker League en initiator Annie Duke af. De Ethische commissie van de League diskwalificeerde een spelers die in het verleden bleek te zijn veroordeeld voor een zedenmisdrijf. De speler, Michael DiVita, werd uit het $20.000 Main Event gezet, nadat hij zich plaatste via een $1.500 buy-in kwalificatietoernooi. Hij kreeg $1.500 terug, de buy-in van de satellite.DiVita dreigde de Epic Poker League aan te klagen voor onrechtmatige diskwalificatie. Hij krijgt nu steun van Dusty Schmidt. Hij noemt de uitsluiting ‘ironisch’. “The irony is astounding. Annie Duke herself used to pimp UB which has stolen tens of millions (if not more) for a large fee (and to my knowledge has kept all the money) and rumor has it, has had a number of shady dealings in the past,” schreef Schmidt.
Hij noemt Howard Lederer, de broer van Annie Duke, de Bernie Madoff van de pokerwereld. Madoff was een beurshandelaar die in 2008 werd gearresteerd door de FBI. Hij fraudeerde voor $65 miljard. “Yet she is the one telling others that they are too shady to allow a seat in her Epic Poker League, and stealing money from them in the process. Of course if you are one of her friends like Mike Matusow who is a convicted felon, then that is obviously not a problem. What a world we live in!”
Punish him!
De oplossing ligt volgens Schmidt in regulering en het straffen van mensen die de fout ingaan. “We need laws with strong deterrents just like they have in any other industry and when people cheat, there needs to be a much cleaner way of reporting it and hopefully some penalties that fit the crime.”
