Jake Cody behaalt finaletafel, Portugal legaliseert online gokken, Matusow eist excuses

De Briste team Pokerstars Pro Jake Cody heeft de finaletafel van het Estrellas Main Event behaald. Portugezen kunnen vanaf 10 juli legaal online gokken en Mike ‘De Mouth’ Matusow is nog steeds boos over een penalty die hij kreeg wegens ‘Excessive Celebration.’

Op dag drie van het €1100 Main Event hadden we nog twee Nederlandse paardjes in de race; Olvedo Heinze werd 44ste voor €2.590 terwijl Patrick Renkers voor zijn 29ste plaats €3.350 kreeg. Details over hoe ze er uit gingen ontbreken helaas. Jake Cody was van begin tot einde de focus van de Pokerstars bloggers.

De Britse team pro behaalde de finaletafel, maar op het moment van schrijven is bekend dat hij achtste is geworden voor €13.030. Morgen leest u hier wie er vandoor is gegaan met de hoofdprijs van €136k. De chipcounts van de laatste drie op dit moment:

Portugal legaliseert online kansspelen
Vanaf 10 juli wordt online gokken legaal in Portugal. Er is gekozen voor een gesloten markt, wat betekent dat de Portugezen voortaan alleen nog maar tegen andere Portugezen mogen online pokeren. De Troika, een samenwerking van de Europese Commissie, de Europese Centrale Bank en het Internationaal Monetair Fonds, oefende al langere tijd druk op het Portugese politieke orgaan om de boel op orde te krijgen, maar slaagde er niet in om het belastingtarief van 25% naar beneden te krijgen. De verwachting is dan ook dat veel Portugezen hun heil alsnog gaan zoeken bij illegale aanbieders.

Mike Matusow eist excuses van WSOP organisatie
Eerder deze week berichtte we al over een penalty die Mike Matusow had gekregen tijdens event 25 van de WSOP, een $2.500 Omaha/Seven Card Stud Hi-Low toernooi. Bij de laatste 23 spelers van dit toernooi won ”The Mouth” een grote pot en vierde dat uitbundig.

Cameron Tahmasebi raised to 12,000 and Jeet Sketty clicked it to 18,000. Mike Matusow called and so did Fu Wong. Tahmasebi was now all in for 13,500 on third and the three players proceeded to fourth. Matusow bet 6,000, Wong called, Sketty made it 12,000 and Matusow three bet to 18,000. Wong was skeptical and folded.

Matusow said, “If I win this pot, everybody will be playing for second.”

Until sixth, Matusow was betting and had another 4,500 behind, Sketty put him to the test and all turned over their cards.

“Come on, I deserve this,” yelled Matusow, almost losing his voice. The dealer delivered seventh and Matusow started cheering loudly, running away from the tournament area and everybody in the rather silent Amazon room could hear him. Matusow pounded the table in celebration as he continued to laud the hand. He raked in the massive pot with the straight and low and was then given a one round penalty for his “outrageous behavior.”

“Is this for real? I didn’t do anything. You get a penalty for getting excited? I didn’t even swear.” The tournament staff claimed they were only doing their job.

Matusow was visibly upset by the ruling almost to the point of tears. Some players, such as Joe Tehan and Owais Ahmed came to his defense, while others like Robert Mizrachi and Matt Lefkowitz tried their best to calm Matusow down and get him refocused.

Matusow was dus niet blij met de penalty. Een orbit niet mee mogen spelen in de eindfase van een toernooi met hoge antes is uiteraard ook behoorlijk frustrerend. De grote vraag is dus in hoeverre de penalty terecht was. Volgens Matusow’s vriend Daniel Negreanu is het in ieder geval een veel te zware straf. In zijn blog op Full Contact Poker pleit Negreanu er voor om eerst een waarschuwing te geven in dit soort situaties:

For the sake of argument, let’s just say that Mike was guilty of excessive celebration according to the TDA rules. How in the world can you justify such a harsh penalty without issuing a simple warning prior to that decision? A simple, “Hey Mike, you have been warned. If you do that again you will get a one round penalty for excessive celebration.”

This is consistent with a major problem I have with quite a few of the TDA rules that go straight to a penalty without giving the players the benefit of the doubt, and the courtesy of a warning.

That needs to change. I don’t know how to make it change, but I needed to say something. We need to stop taking ourselves so seriously. Dave Lamb (red: de toernooidirecteur) thought Mike celebrated excessively. Several of the players in the tournament disagreed and showed their support for Mike via twitter. Unfortunately, that can’t be reversed at this point, but I’m hoping that in the future we can all agree that a TD shouldn’t have such a heavy influence on the outcome of a tournament, ESPECIALLY without first issuing a warning. I can’t think of a good argument for punishing players so severely without a just, stern, and fair warning.

Poker needs to be fun. There will be no mall cops on the WSOP staff and the words excessive celebration should never be spoken by a TD.
