Hét online kanon van 2009, Patrik Antonius, spreekt openlijk over poker, sportsbetten en de European Poker Awards. De Fin pakte een kleine $9 miljoen winst op de highstakes cashtafels van Full Tilt. Een topjaar toch? “It might look like I did very well, but I lost millions, millions, millions of dollars with other stuff last year.”
Voor Antonius voelde 2009 dus helemaal niet zo fijn. “I had a lot of bad runs; I would go down millions, then I would get it back. There were some real ups and downs. When I bet sports, I bet at least $50,000. And I don’t think I won any bets last year, And I lost millions on the golf course, as well. I’m a big loser in golf now”, vertelde Antonius tegen Cardplayer.
Hij was ook niet al te gelukkig in het backen van spelers. Antonius schat dat het backen van andere spelers hem in zijn hele leven al zo’n $10 miljoen heeft gekost. “I’ve been very unlucky with other people. It’ll be hard to get it back in my lifetime.”
Fysiek ongemak
In 2010 heeft Antonius zijn draai ook nog niet gevonden. Hij verloor totnogtoe zo’n $2 miljoen op Full Tilt. Lichtpuntje was dat Antonius afgelopen weekend voor het eerst dit jaar een plusje kon noteren na een pokersessie. Hij pakte een kleine $200.000. Fysieke problemen zorgen ervoor dat Antonius niet lekker in zijn vel zit. “I’ve been struggling a lot with my physical condition. I’m in rehab now for my back. Sometimes poker is so good, and life is great, and things are working out, and everything goes your way. But I’ve had a very bad last month. I’ve struggled a lot.”
“My life always goes like this. Things go bad or good. I hate these moments when everything just goes bad. When I get better, everything usually gets better, too. It’s normal. Welcome to the poker world.”
Antonius heeft een hekel aan downswings. Soms hebben die ook effect op hemzelf en zijn pokerspel. “If I have personal things going on in my life, then the downswings can affect me. And it depends how it happens. When I lose in very good games when I couldn’t have really done anything differently, then it doesn’t really bother me. But if I lose in a game where I really shouldn’t have lost, then it bothers me.”
Poker Awards
Begin dit jaar kreeg Antonius twee Pokerawards uitgereikt. Nou ja, uitgereikt, hij was er niet bij. De Fin was de winter ontvlucht en genoot van de Mexicaanse zon. Hij won de titel “Best online pokerplayer of the year” bij zowel de Europese Poker Awards als de Nordic Poker Awards. “My play was in great shape, and it was a really interesting and eventful year at Full Tilt Poker. Isildur brought a whole new dimension to the games and created huge action. I like it when tough and aggressive fresh blood shows up cause it’s always an opportunity to learn for me, too. A big thank you for all voters.”
Brian Hastings, de man die Isildur1 $4 miljoen armer maakte aan de pokertafels, krijgt van Antonius een flinke veeg uit de pan. De Fin heeft er helemaal geen moeite mee als iemand een datamineprogramma gebruikt. Maar handen vergelijken en gaan overleggen met vrienden om vervolgens de beste strategie te bepalen, dat vond Antonius echt te ver gaan. En er dan ook nog eens achteraf openlijk voor uitkomen: “I’m not sure I agree with how he wrote his ‘thanks everybody’ blog. He should just be happy to take the money. If I were him, I would’ve just taken the money, I wouldn’t have said anything publicly, and if I did say something, I would’ve said, ‘I was very lucky. I ran over $3 million above expectation. It could happen to anybody.’”
Antonius claimt dat hij nog nooit een programma als Holdemmanager heeft gebruikt. “I never have even thought about using any of it. I don’t care if they get that information off me, because I can always change my game. If they think they know how I play, I’ll change my game, and I’ll beat them. You basically have to play your opponent.”
De komende tijd zullen we Antonius niet veel zien in de grote pokertoernooien. Hij richt zich nu eerst op zijn gezondheid en zijn familie. Zijn vriendin Maya Geller is drie maanden zwanger, samen hebben ze al een dochter van 2,5 jaar. Antonius wil fit worden: “When I’m in shape, everything feels lighter, I breathe so much better. Overall, it’s better for my poker game.”
