Tony G: ‘Don’t underestimate the Socceroos’

Antanas Guoga oftewel Tony G gelooft in de kansen van Australië op het WK voetbal. De bookmakers zitten er volledig naast met hun voorspellingen, Australië gaat volgens de Part[Po]ker Pro de tweede ronde halen! En het WK is volgens Tony G het mooiste sportevenement ter wereld.

 

De Australiër van Litouwse afkomst (of andersom) benadrukt dat hij absoluut niet chauvinistisch is: “If Lithuania were playing Australia I would pray for a 3-3 draw but don’t underestimate the Socceroos. They can qualify for the later stages of the competition.”

 

Tony G analyseert de poule van de Aussies haarfijn. De Duitsers zijn structureel goed op grote toernooien, maar er is geen enkele speler die je hart sneller doet kloppen. “I fancy that the Aussie army featuring Cahill, Kewell and doggedly led by captain Lucas Neill will get at least a point.”

 

Één punt dus voor de Socceroos tegen de Duitsers. Dan Ghana: “It will be bike time for Ghana – no Michael Essien and three points to Australia.” Vier punten nu. Laatste horde Servië: “I fancy max points against Serbia. Nemanja Vidic is one player to watch in the Serb line-up but Australia will inflict pain on Serbia – more pain than I inflicted on ‘the serb’ Nenad Medic in the 2009 Premier League.”

 

Zeven punten voor Australië in de groepsfase dus, terwijl de bookmakers 8/1 geven op een groepswinst en 9/4 voor een plaats in de tweede ronde. “Bookmakers, you have got it wrong, wrong, wrong and I am going to make you pay!” Geloof jij ook heilig in de kansen van de voetballende kangoeroe’s? Het Engelse team is volgens Tony kansloos voor de titel. “Those boys will go far but like the Devilfish and Roland de Wolfe they will choke – they will push it too far.” Het hele gedoe met de WAGS (wives and girlfriends) zorgt ervoor de spelers er niet bij zijn met hun hoofd en andere lichaamsdelen: “Their players need to keep their balls in one place! All this media attention of the WAGS is also really funny. Who cares that they have been out shopping in Cape Town – why don’t they worry about the ball control of their partners?”
